Net Neutrality

This_is_for_Everyone

Net neutrality is a terminology that is used when referring to the principle of allowing people to access data and information that is on the internet regardless of the source.

It appeals to the Internet service providers who control what applications or content should appear on the internet. There have been several debates regarding the issue and different people have differed to some extent. Government agents or Internet service providers are used to blocking some content or favor others when they feel that the content will have an adverse impact on the internet users.

The Internet is the source for all information more so in this era where internet sites are being used to solve numerous issues. Application developers are always in a tussle with the governments and the internet service providers to allow some applications that have been developed to be used by the general users. The network equality debate has been on for a longer term. The discussion was started by a Columbian University law professor who sought to be explained why some data is charged differently by the government band relevant bodies, why there was differential treatment of the applications by the user, content, the mode of communication and also the type of application.

There are various reasons why the debate will still continue for a longer period. It’s now more delicate since the internet has become the order of the day and most individuals are using the internet. Different age groups are accessing the internet for various purposes. Companies and other organizations depend on the data that is available on the internet to ensure competence in their businesses. Schools and higher learning institutions are embracing research through the internet. Government agencies are applying technologies to control crime and monitoring the inmates. Factories and industries are using data on the internet to be able to offer better services to the clients. Research and development by car manufacturers use the internet as their primary source of information. Agriculture is embracing technology derived from the applications that are built on the internet and the finance more, so the banking industry is developing applications to increase their profits and offer better services to their customers. These and many more spheres of the economy are using applications developed to enhance efficiency.

People access the internet using the connections that are provided by the internet service providers. The providers of the carriers of the internet are therefore able to see and control what users send and receive on the internet. The information that users send over the internet is then transmitted in the form of data packets over the internet. When we connect to the internet via the systems provided, we are free to connect to any other endpoint since each Internet user becomes an end point on the internet user platform. People are then able to connect to another person’s computer (peer to peer), a different website, a video stream such as YouTube, an email system or any other link that is on the internet.

One of the most insightful interviews on Net Neutrality belongs to Jason Hope, IT entrepreneur and investor from Scottsdale, Arizona. It’s definitely worth checking out!.

For the internet to be successful, there must be two main principles that should be observed.

  • First, every equipment connected to the internet should be able to connect easily to any other connected device.
  • Secondly, internet protocol should be used by all services which are the most flexible and reliable route to accommodate all types of data on the internet. Content that is carried or transmitted on the Internet includes; messaging, e-mail among others.
